Everybody always says that sunglasses protect your eyes. But from what? And why do we even need to protect them in the first place? The obvious answer would be that sunglasses protect our eyes from the sun. But it's much more than just that.
Blue light
Our screens are a big part of our daily lives. From laptops to smart watches we are almost constantly looking at a screen. But believe it or not, this is actually one of the main reasons we should wear sunglasses. You’ve probably heard of blue light, the light that our electronics give off, so you probably know that this light can be very damaging to your eyes. Special blue light lenses (which you can check out by clicking here) are designed to protect your eyes from that light, which can lead to eye cancers or vision loss over time. I guess technically they aren’t sunglasses, but you get the gist.
UV rays
On the more obvious side, sunglasses help to protect our eyes from UV rays, which can eventually lead to photokeratitis, or sunburn on your eyes (ouch), and cataracts. Something most people don’t know is that even on days when the sun isn’t shining as bright as usual, UV rays are just as prominent and dangerous as they usually are. Because of this, it’s important to try and wear sunglasses every time you go outside for longer periods of time, not just when you’re out at the beach.
The outside world
All of the little things like bugs, dirt, and bacteria are constantly at risk of getting in our eyes and causing damage. Sunglasses act like a wall between the outside world and our eyes, making it safer on our eyes to do all of our day to day tasks. Even when we don't feel it, random things are constantly getting in our eyes and putting our vision at risk. Because of the moisture in our eyes, bacteria and germs are likely to stick and could cause anything from infection to permanent vision loss. It’s always better safe than sorry, especially when it comes to something as important as our vision.
Although sunglasses may just seem like a fashion statement or a beach day necessity, they’re actually a critical part in keeping our eyes healthy, and shouldn't be overlooked. Here at Fuse, we’re happy to help you protect your eyes in style. So no matter why you wear sunglasses or which ones you wear, you know you’re always fully protected.
